Seribu Islands Steps Up Waste Sorting Campaign

Through a regional development roadshow, the Seribu Islands Regency administration is reinforcing environmental management by focusing on community capacity building and a waste segregation initiative.

Seribu Islands Regent, Muhammad Fadjar Churniawan, waste sorting should become a deeply rooted habit practiced by the entire community, not just a response to government mandates.

"Our aim is for the waste segregation program to go beyond official directives and move toward tangible action. Individual Service Provider (PJLP) staff and neighborhood heads must lead by example, sorting waste right at the household level," he expressed, Tuesday (6/9).

Waste Sorting Promoted on Tidung Island

He noted that waste sorting at the source in Seribu Islands has already reached 71 percent.

"We will continue to build on this progress until all urban villages achieve the 100 percent mark," he clarified.

Fadjar highlighted that effective waste management at its source is vital for fostering environmental autonomy within the islands and cutting down on the transfer of waste to the Jakarta mainland.

Further, he reminded stakeholders that a clean environment is essential to sustain the tourism industry—the backbone of the Seribu Islands' economy.

"If the environment is clean, tourists will be more inclined to visit. This is a shared responsibility, not solely the burden of sanitation workers. When a beach is seen to be dirty, every segment of the community must take part in cleaning it up," he stated.

Seribu Islands People's Welfare Section Head, Emil Rozaki, noted that the program is designed to empower local community leaders—including RT/RW, LMK, and PJLP staff—as frontline advocates for environmental awareness.

Then, the session provided participants with comprehensive knowledge of waste sorting initiatives, alongside materials on regional administration, public services, and the development of transparent and accountable financial and performance reports.

"We want local administrators to gain a deeper understanding of their functions and responsibilities, particularly regarding administrative order, to prevent any complications in the future," he explained.

He added that enhancing institutional capacity serves as a strategic move to bolster synergy between the public and the regional government, covering both public services and environmental initiatives.

"We hope to see more accountable territorial governance and a more widespread adoption of the waste sorting movement among residents," he emphasized.
